LAHORE: The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to issue notification of reserved seats in the Punjab Assembly. “Order to issue Notification on 5 reserved seats of PTI in Punjab Assembly”
The Lahore High Court (LHC) has accepted petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) against non-notification of five reserved seats in the provincial assembly.
Justice Shahid Waheed heard the petition of PTI MPA Zainab Umair.
During the hearing in the court,
Ali Zafar, advocate on behalf of PTI, Harris Azmat, advocate on behalf of Election Commission and Khalid
Ishaq Advocate on behalf of PML-N gave arguments while Advocate General Punjab Shehzad Shaukat also appeared in the court.
Order to issue Notification on 5 reserved seats of PTI in Punjab Assembly
PTI’s lawyer told the court that under the election law, only PTI women can be elected to vacant reserved seats.
PTI women are not being appointe-d to these seats, so the court should order the Election Commission to issue notification of appointments of members of the Punjab Assembly.
It should be note-d that the writt-en reply filed by the federal and Punjab governments on the petitions in the court said that the petitions are not admissible.
The court also issued notices to the Attorney General of Pakistan and Advocate General of Punjab seeking their assistance.
The petition contended that the Election Commission was acting against the law by not issuing notification
on 5 reserved seats of the Punjab Assembly.
